Bicycle Mechanics Broken bottom bracket? Tacoed wheel? Retro-direct with flip-flop style hub?
Thread Tools. Hi folks.
I've been reading up on retro-direct drive bicycles. For the uninitiated, pedaling forwards drives the bike forward at a particular gear ratio, and retro direct bike backwards drives the bike forward at a different gear ratio.
The bike can coast but not roll backwards. The "typical" approach is a durect chain that passes from retro direct bike chainwheel over the "forward" gear, around an idler, then back over the "reverse" gear and to the chainwheel.
The popularly-linked diagram is here. Would it be possible to achieve the same effect using a flip-flop hub?
I'm not sure if the freewheel and fixed sprockets come off of a flip-flop hub I assume so so I'll just say "flip-flop-style hub".
On the retro direct bike side of the hub you install a freewheel as usual with a single sprocket.
Then you use an axle for the cranks. The chain on the right is mounted as usual. The chain on the left must be reversed must drive the freewheel forward when the pedals spin backwardsso at least one idler retro direct bike needed. This would be beneficial over the standard approach for three reasons.
You don't need to rely on durect BB cup to handle torque: This dirfct be quieter - the BB cup solution has the hub-mounted freewheel flying when the cup mounted freewheel is driven, and vice versa, due to the green bike shorts in speeds. This could be done without needing a frame modification beside the idler - the single retro direct bike method has to pass a chain twice between the right chainstay; apparently this usually requires modifying the frame on all but a mountain bike.
Ertro the idea is: Yank the fixed gear off the hub and screw on, backwards, a fully-threaded freewheel. Pull retro direct bike cranks off the axle and replace with an axle from a tandem. Install a chainwheel to the left and right retro direct bike the bottom bracket. Put a chain on both sides, with the left-side chain reversed midway down the length of the chainstay via one or two idlers.
I'm very new to all this so it's very possible bike repair stand clamp diy I'm missing some glaringly obvious points.
Maybe nobody makes freewheels that can be reversed - i. Or maybe there's something else asymmetrical about them that would retro direct bike this. Or maybe tandem axles won't work that way. Any thoughts are appreciated! View Public Profile.

I see that Dicta makes one, I'm sure others do as well. My original question about whether a flip-flop hub could be used for two simultaneous freewheels stands, as does my general question about retro direct bike or not the concept is feasible at all. Um, as this is a new concept to retro direct bike, what advantage would pedaling backwards have? Bio-mechanically speaking, I can push down harder pedaling forwards than I can pedaling backwards.
